Eva Aylagas

Research Scientist
KAUST
Participates in 1 Session

Eva is originally from Spain. Growing up by the seaside in Alicante, she developed a deep curiosity about nature and the environment. This curiosity led her to pursue a degree in biology at the University of La Laguna (ULL), Tenerife, where she obtained her B.S. in Biology. She furthered her studies with an MSc in Biotechnology at ULL and later completed a Master's degree in Biodiversity and Ecosystem Management at the University of the Basque Country. In 2017, Eva earned her Ph.D. in Molecular Ecology at AZTI, Spain, focusing on developing biotic indices based on environmental DNA data for marine ecological quality assessment.

In 2018, Eva joined KAUST as a postdoctoral researcher. Her work involved analyzing changes in eukaryotic and prokaryotic diversity as a response to anthropogenic pressures such as aquaculture, port construction, and oil extraction. She utilized molecular tools to study biological communities in impacted areas, aiming to develop new biotic indices for standard routine monitoring programs.

In 2021, Eva joined Red Sea Global as a Senior Manager in the Red Sea Zone Authority. She supervised marine monitoring surveys, employing advanced technologies such as Structure from Motion for underwater photogrammetry and collecting environmental samples for biodiversity assessment using molecular methods.

Currently, Eva is a Research Scientist at KAUST, focusing on understanding marine biodiversity through the use of environmental DNA (eDNA)-based technologies. Her research spans various projects, including studying coral reef-associated communities, surveying non-indigenous species, and developing tools for the early detection of specific species of interest.
